White, whiter, whitest

I have often wondered about this strange attraction with fair skin. It's almost like an obsession for some people. Even newborn babies are not spared. Is the child fair? Oh, she is not. Probably, because the mother is dark. A boy can be dark and get away with it, but a girl?! Tch, Tch. Will she get married? If she starts applying enough turmeric on her skin, maybe one day her color will suddenly change. One lady in our neighborhood, carelessly called my friend who was in college at that time, dark and ugly. The poor thing spent hours crying, and nothing I said could make her feel better. This was ridiculous to me, because not only was this girl pretty, she was also a sensitive, bright young female. Another one of the broad assumptions we make, is that all madrasis are dark. First and foremost, there is no such thing as madrasis. There are south indians and north indians. People from madras are called tamilians and each state has its' share of fair and dark people. It's no...

A silent wish

My silent wish is for people who have waited long enough for their prayers to be answered. To know that their wait was worth it. I want those who have prayed to know that they did not pray in vain. I want very much for unhappy people to be happy. And sleep after a long time, knowing that God hasn't gone anywhere. Sometimes you have to leave it to the Great Outer Force to come in and work it out for you. And with all that God has at His disposal, waiting at His command to help, He can help and do it for you in a minute. Direct your prayer, however small and sincere, to God. Have a blind heart with blind faith and you will, you will, open your eyes to more happiness than you can see. God's love saves the best for those who go through the worst. I want to see them happy. Because, then it validates my belief in the beauty of the world and the beauty of the one who created it. I may have this absolute child-like belief but I do believe that there is a better world than the one we ar...

What's that on my skin?

The cosmetic industry has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few decades. Men and women, have a wide array of products to choose from - soaps, shampoos, conditioners, colognes, hair sprays, gels, toothpaste, shaving products - the list is endless, really. The western world has always battled with the ill-effects of using chemicals on their skin. India, thanks to the growing influx of malls and increased exposure to global cosmetics, has a lot to be concerned about. Have you ever counted how many cosmetics you use in a day? Chances are it's nearly 10. Most people use these products without a second thought, and believe that the government must certainly be policing the safety of the mixtures. But they are wrong about this. Search for any product related information at - http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep2/search.php?search=&searchtype=products&Go.x=17&Go.y=14 Personal care products contain carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, plasticize...

Blah

I stumble and I fall The more I try, the more I fall... Small steps seem like obstacles to me, I'm lost in my own little world, it seems.... Solutions seem distant to me, Now, why would that be? For every step I take forward, I move backwards it seems.... Mountains stand still through the test of time, I do not want to be a mountain now, do I? I would rather be a river, Flow through mountains and ridges..... Make me like the sun, someone Let me shine whole day and have fun.... When the night comes, let me sleep And wake up next day to do as I please.... I travel on, sometimes near sometimes far, Spreading sunshine and joy to all.... Hurray for the sun, Now give me some rain someone!

Bollywood and Oscar nominations

Bollywood is the informal name given to the popular Mumbai-based film industry in India. It even has its own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary. I find the name in itself, unoriginal and a pun on Hollywood. A lot of movies in Bollywood are re-hashed or just plain annoying. Anu mallik, a music director makes a career out of ripping English songs and presenting them "Bollywood Ishytile". Most of these songs reach the top ten and appeal to a lot of people. No questions asked, no explanations given. I, myself didn't give much thought to this till some hindi song was played at an Indian function and one of my American colleagues asked me, "Oh, this sounds so familiar?". The song was "Why did you break my heart?" courtesy Annu malik in Akele Hum, Akele Tum. The song is a blatant copy of George Michael's "Last Christmas". There are many such examples and I could fill a book just coming up with those. I do watch Bollywood movies, but there ar...

The garden

Little showers of dew drops every night, The black bird sings a song about its plight. The puppy wags his tail, Runs around leaving a sorry trail. Our garden is green, Filled with tomatoes and trees. I tell the bird to leave tonight, I tell the dog to poop some place else. My neighbor has a yard, Full of junk and such, Thank you, but I don't like all this that much. Is cleaning such a chore? Pick up your shovel, And dig a hole So much talk is enough for today Wake up tomorrow, it’s a brand new day.

Faith and atheism

Simply put, an atheist does not believe in any supernaturnal power, or God. Their theory is based on being in control of their own destiny. Some point to Darwin's theory or the Big Bang theory as proof of our existence. They also call themselves, humanists. While the existence of God is very difficult to prove, consider this - If indeed, there was God, would you want to know Him? Strangely, not many would even believe that there is indeed such a possibility? Atheists often point out how religious or spiritually inclined individuals are not rational or objective. Anybody who believed in God was silly, superstitious, ignorant, and had simply not looked at the evidence. Some atheists feel that believers in God were uneducated and were just following traditions, superstitions, and things that really made no sense to a person who was aware of what was going on around them. How does one explain miracles or life changing experience, all of which defy any logic or reason? Have you experien...
